Scrolling thought a list of items on a mobile device is one of the most common, and graphically taxing, interactions that developers have to support. The Adobe SDK team has gone to significant effort to optimize scrolling on mobile in the 4.5 SDK (Hero). Taking advantage of these performance optimizations requires a non-standard implementation of item renderers. Extending the new base mobile item renderer and using the new PersistanceManger class will be covered. This session is intended for developers comfortable with writing custom component in ActionScript 3. Existing knowledge of the Flex component lifecycle will be helpful, but not required. This session will be light on slides and heavy on code.

At some point, Flash and Flex developers encounter the issues of modifying a Flex RIA to support another language and accomodate software changes for specific cultural preferences. The Flex frameworks provide localization tools and programmatic support features for Flash-based applications and widgets. Unfortunately the support for localization differs significantly between the toolsets and frameworks offered. Making adding multi-language features to your RIA a complicated task. This session will demonstrate three (3) simple steps to creating multi-language features. This method is designed to work regardless of your choice of Flex architecture. And it integrates seamless with even the most popular frameworks. Come learn how painless localization can be.

The rapidly increasing number of screens that Flash applications can run on, and rapidly decreasing amount of time I have to actually write code encouraged me to find a way to share as much code across as many screen targets as possible (Web, AIR, mobile, etc.). This session will present ways to organize your projects and design patterns that work well when using the same code in multiple projects. Use of new project types in Flash Builder 4.5 (Burrito) and widespread use of the Presentation Model pattern will be covered in this session. An abstract approach to states that facilitates using the same presentation model for significantly different views and applications will be explored. This approach to project design has the added benefit of making your code more testable … if you are into that type of thing.

Web design today seems up in the air. HTML5, CSS3, multi-device support: it seems difficult to know which techniques are available or are the most appropriate for our clients. In this session, we’ll explore progressive enhancement, graceful degradation, and techniques for developing cutting-edge, responsive, and flexible web designs.

The Text Layout Framework (TLF) provides Flex developers advanced typographic and text layout features for both Flex SDK components and custom components. Utilizing TLF can range from straightforward and easy to complex and difficult depending on what a developer needs and wants. However, with some understanding and effort a developer can mold the TLF into something useful and cool. The goal of this session is to briefly review the underlying mechanics of the TLF and discuss strategies and approaches for manipulating these mechanics to add custom functionality and interactivity to text in Flex beyond what is available out of the box, as well as incorporating non-TLF components.

We will discuss creating custom text operations and smoothly incorporating them into the TLF, creating richly featured text components and applications, and bringing user interaction to text beyond just simple text input. Also presented will be code and examples showcasing the possibilities including recreating some features from word processors and desktop publishing software.

Dynamic Programming is a powerful technique that allows one to solve many different types of problems in time for which a naive approach would take exponential time, it is also a method for efficiently solving a broad range of search and optimization problems.

During this session we will look into theory and practical samples like:

In this session, Joel Hooks will provide a basic overview of using Parsley to build MVC applications. We will discuss how Parsley works and how the Cairngorm 3 specification can be effectively used with it.

The Microsoft Kinect, with its stereoscopic, infrared wizardry, has given us a fascinating tool for rich interaction design. For the first time, a high-quality, depth-sensing camera is widely available at a price many people can afford. While this is exciting, equally so is Adobe’s new Molehill API, which takes advantage of GPU acceleration, allowing Flash direct access to DirectX and OpenGL.
